Fourteen Hills: The Cherry on Top

LitCrawl 2012

Passing through the streets of the Mission last Saturday evening may have left the locals Junse Kimwondering what was going on. Walking among the murals and parks were hordes of Lit Crawlers - out and about looking for their next stop of the evening. At the tail-end of the three and a half hour event consisting of 850 readers across countless venues, stood a reading that held its own.

Settled in amongst the scent of pie and the bustling backdrop of 25th and Mission, the Fourteen Hills and ElevenEleven reading featured all the elements that LitQuake represents for the San FranciscKristi Mooso community. Stories intermingled with poetry, including some of the authors featured in more recent editions of Fourteen Hills: The SFSU Review, such as the short stories of Junse Kim (Fourteen Hills Issue 18.1) and the poetry of Kristi Moos (Issue 18.2). Michael Rubin Book Award winner Stoyan Vassilev also shared one of the stories from his forthcoming chapbook, Hope Seven, and three writers recently featured in ElevenEleven also shared their work: Daniel Curzon, Judy Halebsky, and Zarina Zabrisky.

Packed with a hungry crowd devouring pie, prose, and poetry, a great time was had all around. As Kristi Moos read her wolf poem, a sudden howl of a fire truck’s siren careened down 25th. Junse Kim read a heartbreaking story about a mother publicly reprimanded by her husband for enjoying a slice of strawberry pie without her children. Stoyan Vassilev shared his story about life and death in post-communist Bulgaria. Daniel Curzon shared a hilarious story about a “nun” on a street car, Judy Halebsky her award-winning poetry, and Zarina Zabrisky closed the evening with her commanding performance complete with musical accompaniment and warnings from her late Russian grandmother.

LitCrawl itself was a gorgeous affair, and the air crackled with stories and the lively good nature of all the attendees.
